The Ligonians of Ligon II possess a vaccine for the deadly Anchilles fever affecting Styris IV. The Enterprise is sent to acquire it, and the crew meet Lutan, the leader of the Ligonians. Tasha demonstrates her strength against Lutan's 'secondary' Hagon, and Lutan is impressed. Lutan kidnaps her, telling Picard he'll return her if honour is satisfied. Lutan wants Tasha as his wife, but she'll have to fight to the death with Yareena, Lutan's current 'First One', for the prize. Tasha and Yareena fight with poisoned spikes, and Tasha wins. Honour is satisfied. Lutan agrees to give the Enterprise the vaccine - and then Beverly revives the 'dead' Yareena. Yareena passes her favours to Hagon, who'll be the new ruler of the planet. Music for this episode was provided by talented composer Fred Steiner, who scored many episodes of the original Star Trek series.

Trivia

• Tasha Yar was originally envisaged as a tough Hispanic character called Macha Hernandez, loosely based on Vasquez from the movie Aliens. Marina Sirtis was considered for the role, and Denise Crosby for Troi, until it was decided they should swap. The character's name was briefly Tanya Yar.

• Denise Crosby is Bing Crosby's granddaughter.
