The Enterprise is looking for survivors from a crashed freighter, the Odin. They arrive at Angel I, a planet run by a matriarchy. Riker, particularly, is out of place as they attempt diplomacy. The survivors are found, but they want to stay, as do their wives, women from Angel I who are rebelling against the oppressive female regime. As a virus ravages the Enterprise, Riker is unable to beam the rebels to safety and they are all sentenced to death. Riker reaches a compromise - the rebels are exiled to a remote part of the planet. The Enterprise has recovered from the virus, and heads off to investigate reports of a Romulan incursion into Federation space.

Trivia

• Patrick Berry's original idea was to use the female-ruled planet as a metaphor for apartheid. This slowly mutated until it became a rather bizarre Prime Directive story.
