Written by Maurice Hurley and Robert Lewin. Directed by Paul Lynch.
Stardate: 41365.9 First aired: 1 February 1988
The Enterprise is Starbase 74 to upgrade its computer, a task performed by Bynars, small creatures that communicate in binary. Riker immerses himself in a holodeck simulation of a jazz bar, where he falls for Minuet, the most realistic hologram he's ever seen. Picard is also amazed by the Bynar's upgrade. The Bynars, though, fake a magnetic shield breakdown and steal the ship from its dock, with only Picard and Riker onboard. Picard threatens to self-destruct the ship, and the Bynars reveal they need the Enterprise's computer memory to save their species from an electromagnetic pulse. Picard helps them.
Guest Cast
Katy Beyer as "01", Ron Brown as "Drummer", Gene Dynarski as "Quinteros", Alexandra Johnson as "10", Iva Lane as "00", Carolyn McCormick as "Minuet". Kelli Ann McNally as "11", Abdul Salaam el Razzac as "Bass Player", Jack Sheldon as "Piano Player".
Trivia
The title is binary notation (the base ten equivalent being 201). It's all four of the Bynars' names in a row. Indeed, if Bynars limit themselves to two digit names, it's every possible Bynar name.
